Blurb/Shorttext:
The expansion of cities is accompanied by the need to develop strategies to mitigate what is called urban "chaos". Urban agriculture is a practice that integrates with the urban ecosystem, proving to be a multifunctional tool with environmental, social and economic contributions. This work aimed to present an experience of urban agriculture, mentioning the characteristics of the Program Hortas Cariocas (PHC) in the Production Unit of the hill of São Carlos. The PHC promotes agro-ecological agricultural activities that enable the creation of jobs, training and the supply of quality food, structuring agricultural initiatives in the city. In Morro do São Carlos, a dump has been transformed into a community garden that produces more than 50 types of organic food and received a world sustainability award in France. However, the misuse of waste land exposes these soils to pollution with organic, inorganic and pathogenic substances. Therefore, it is important that urban gardens are better planned in order to minimize negative influences of existing pollution in cities.
